About Our Boats

We named two of our boats the Steller Sunrise and Steller Explorer after George Steller, the naturalist on Vitus Bering's voyage of discover to Alaska.  Alaska became a possession of Russia as a result of this voyage.  The Steller Jay,  Steller Sealion, Steller Eider and Steller Sea Eagle are all named after George Steller who is also credited with saving the expedition after Bering perished on the island now called Bering Island in the Bering Sea.  The tale of Steller and Bering's expedition is chronicled in Corey Ford's book, Where The Sea Breaks It's Back.

The Steller Explorer and Steller Sunrise are both 43'  long and certified and inspected annually by the United States Coast Guard.  We typically limit to 15 the number of people on our Small Group Tours on these boats though they were originally designed to carry more than 30 people.

Fox Islander

Both vessels have heated cabins, bathrooms, salon areas, sleeping areas, life rafts, and walk around decks for excellent viewing.  Each is equipped with the most modern navigational equipment such as radar, global positioning system (GPS), video chart plotters, video depth sounders, and marine radios which allow us to contact other vessels and the USCG at all times.

Our third boat, the Fox Islander, was custom built on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.  A New England design, this vessel has a flybridge which is great for spotting wildlife and low sides making it ideal for fishing and photography.  It also has a heated cabin, modern electronics, bathroom, bunks and a life raft along with the other USCG required gear.  We had the Fox Islander trucked to Seattle, where it was launched in Puget Sound.  We then ran in north to Alaska which took about a week.

This photo of a breaching orca was taken from the Fox Islander in Aialik Bay.  It is now a "stock photo" and has been published in vacation guides promoting Alaska tourism.
